We’re now accepting applications for 2023 Council Scholarships. These awards are available to Wisconsin residents who are blind or visually impaired and who plan to pursue post-secondary education in the Fall of 2023. Students interested in applying for a scholarship can find application instructions and materials on our website at wcblind.org/events/scholarships/wcblind.org/events/scholarships/.

Last year the Council awarded $2,000 scholarships to eight students from around the state. 2022 scholarship recipient Nathan Schmitt is finishing up his freshman year at Milwaukee Area Technical College. Nathan says the scholarship enabled him to “concentrate on school without the pressure to bring money in.”

Another 2022 scholarship recipient, Grace Caine, is a junior at UW-Whitewater. She says the extra financial help has given her more time to devote to her studies instead of to an hourly job. She’s been able to devote that time not only toward a music education degree but also toward related extracurricular activities, including her role as president of the Jazz Education Network. She also found time to create the school’s first swing band.

“We’re grateful to be able to award these academic scholarships,” says Denise Jess, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired. “Students with vision loss face daunting barriers in education and employment. Scholarships are a powerful tool for overcoming some of those barriers.”
