Board members contributed to the Big Share to provide a match during the afternoon.
On Tuesday, March 3, the Council participated in an online day of giving called The Big Share. This day of donations is presented by Community Shares of Wisconsin, a membership organization of more than 60 grassroots nonprofits making a sustainable difference in Wisconsin.
In its Big Share messaging, the Council promoted an etiquette guide, which seeks to help people who are sighted answer the question: “What should I do—or not do—when I meet a person who is blind or visually impaired?” The full guide is available at WCBlind.org/media/.
Bridging gaps of misunderstanding and initial discomfort, this tool encourages community connection and fosters interactions between people. Throughout the guide, inclusivity and respect are at the forefront. Suggestions like asking if a person needs help and how you can best assist them, for instance, provides a starting point based on curiosity, versus beginning with an assumption of what help is needed.
The Council appreciated the opportunity to spread the message of inclusivity and respect to an audience beyond the blind and visually impaired community through social media posts and on the Council’s donation page of The Big Share website.
Funds from The Big Share support white canes, low vision evaluations, advocacy efforts and in-home vision rehabilitation visits. Thank you to all those who gave through The Big Share, and who shared the Council’s messages to their own networks.
