This spring, the Council welcomed six volunteers from Exact Sciences into our offices to help with our efforts to make our space more inviting to all. The group spent their morning planting aromatic herbs in pots for our sensory garden; sprucing up the Sharper Vision Store by replacing old hooks to hold products; and organizing and bundling notecards and brochures to make them easier to pass out at Council education and outreach events. These small tasks go a long way toward making the Council a more hospitable place to visit.
Sara Guggenheim, who works for Exact Sciences, received services from the Council after she lost her vision. Exact Sciences offers paid time off to employees to volunteer in the community, so Sara pitched the idea of volunteering at the Council to her coworkers as a way of saying “Thank you” for the services she had received. “We really enjoyed helping out,” Sara says. “It was nice to give back to the community and to learn more about what the Council has to offer.
We greatly appreciate the time and effort all our volunteers give to the Council, whether they come as a group for a day or help the Council individually every week. When volunteers come to the Council, we give them a tour of our offices and show them how their work helps us advance our mission to promote the dignity and empowerment of all Wisconsinites who are blind or have low vision.
