Earlier this month, members of the Council staff took the hour drive from Madison to Dodgeville for our On Sight: Vision Loss Resources in Southwest Wisconsin event. At this free educational event, Council staff gave presentations on a variety of topics important for people in Southwest Wisconsin who are blind or low vision, from accessing vision rehabilitation services to accessibility features on an iPhone. Attendees were even able to get their hands on a variety of items available in the Council’s Sharper Vision Store. This event affirmed our commitment to promoting dignity and independence across the entire state, not just those living in larger cities.

Some people came to the event having lived for years with blindness or low vision. Others are new to vision loss and were looking for services for the first time. And some were there to advocate for a family member or friend who is losing their vision. But everyone left with new information about the services and resources available to them in their own communities. People were able to meet with and even sign up for the Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library and talk with Rehabilitation Specialist Chasie Willis of the Wisconsin Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired. “I loved that everyone who came in the door was engaged and spoke with us and our partners one-on-one,” says Education and Vision Services Director Amy Wurf. “I would say the event was a big success!”

Over the years, a local charitable foundation has generously supported our efforts to reach people in Iowa and western Dane Counties who are learning to live with vision loss. The Council is grateful to the trustees of this anonymous foundation.

And a special thank you to the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Southwest Wisconsin for hosting the event, and for everything they did to make it a success.
