Last year, the Wisconsin Legislature passed into law a new tax credit for workers who are blind. If you (or your spouse if you’re filing a joint return) are blind, employed and paid for transportation services to get to work, you can claim a credit for 50% of your transportation costs on your 2024 Wisconsin state taxes, with a maximum credit $1,500. If you and your spouse are both blind, you can claim a credit of up to $3,000.

For purposes of the Blind Worker Transportation Services Credit, you are eligible if you are employed and meet the IRS definition of blindness for purposes of the increased federal standard deduction. Most types of transportation services you might use to travel between home and your job qualify for the credit, including mass transit, paratransit, taxi or a “transportation network company” like Uber or Lyft.

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue included information on this new tax credit in their 2024 Form 1 Instructions, which you can find at https://www.revenue.wi.gov/TaxForms2024/2024-Form1-inst.pdf. Specific instructions for this tax credit start on page 17 of the instructions.
