The Big Share is tomorrow, March 4, and we invite you to make a difference in the lives of people who are blind or low vision in Wisconsin by making a gift to the Council. Help us reach our goal of raising $8,000! This annual one-day giving event is organized by Community Shares of Wisconsin (CSW) to benefit the Council and dozens of other local nonprofits.

We’ll share more information on special giving events throughout the day tomorrow, but you can give any time throughout the day! If you are unavailable tomorrow, you can support our Big Share campaign today.

This year, our theme for The Big Share is Accessibility for All. For many of us, it’s easy to take for granted things like sending an email or browsing a website. But for people who are blind or low vision, these simple tasks become impossible if websites and email programs are not built with accessibility in mind. The same can be said for going to the doctor’s office or getting to work for people who do not drive and struggle to find accessible transportation options in their community. The Council works tirelessly to remove barriers that restrict people with vision loss from living the independent and fulfilling lives they want and deserve.

Ellen of Oregon, Wisconsin knows the importance of accessibility for all. A pediatric endocrinologist, Ellen says the Council helped her stay productive on the job despite her vision loss. She emphasizes that the guidance and resources offered by the Council have been crucial to continuing her career.

“My visits to the Council opened a new world for work, home and even hobbies I had enjoyed before vision loss,” Ellen says. She learned about the full suite of services the Council offers, including access technology training that strengthened her tech skills. “A meeting with Access Technology Specialist Jim Denham introduced me to the accessibility features of laptops, tablets and iPhones,” Ellen says. “That enabled me to write manuscripts again.”

You’ll have several chances to stretch your donation dollars during The Big Share. Our Big Share Power Hour runs from 10 to 11 a.m., during which the Council can win an additional cash prize if we have the most donors or raise the most dollars during the hour. There will also be a match hour from 2 to 3 p.m., when Numbers 4 Nonprofits will match every gift up to a total of $1,000. That means that any gift you make during this time will have double the impact.

Please consider supporting the Council during The Big Share. Don’t want to wait until tomorrow? You can support our campaign now by visiting The Big Share website.
