New Video Supports Specialized Transportation Drivers in Providing Safe, Comfortable Rides for Blind and Low Vision Riders

When someone who is blind or low vision feels comfortable using the specialized transportation options available to them, such as paratransit, taxis and volunteer drivers, they will be more likely to leave their homes and participate in their communities. A new video produced by the Council will help drivers who transport people who are blind or low vision better understand how to provide a safe, comfortable and accessible experience for their passengers.

Riders with vision loss have unique needs, such as clear, specific verbal descriptions and instructions, and often physical guiding to the vehicle and into their destination. When these needs are neglected, the experience of riding with a stranger can be frightening and disorienting, making the rider reluctant to use the service.

People new to vision loss may have never used specialized transportation services, such as paratransit. Many have previously been drivers and are unfamiliar with the process, and they may have negative perceptions of these services. A positive and affirming transportation experience can reduce fear and misperceptions and increase riders’ willingness to use the service. Greater comfort means they will be more likely to use them to get to medical appointments and stay engaged in the community. For many older adults and people with disabilities, a good relationship with a transportation driver is more than just a ride; it can be an emotional lifeline that reduces loneliness and isolation.

We will be distributing the video to transportation providers and human service organizations like Aging and Disability Resource Centers throughout the state. “We are excited to offer this video to enhance the training experience for drivers,” said Denise Jess, Executive Director at the Council. “We believe that drivers want to provide a safe, welcoming, comfortable experience for all passengers and we hope this video supports their efforts.”
